Understanding the West Nile Virus, Transmission and Risks The West Nile virus (WNV) is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, with the primary carriers being the Culex species. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on birds harboring the virus, and subsequently pass it on to humans and other animals. While most infected individuals do not exhibit symptoms, a small percentage may develop West Nile fever or severe neurological illnesses such as encephalitis or meningitis. The risk of severe disease increases with age, with those over 60 years old at higher risk, as well as individuals with compromised immune systems.
